   Home      Literature

Literature deals with many kinds of writing: books, drama or plays, poems, magazines, and so on. Even song lyrics can be a form of literature to be analyzed. There are many literary terms that you will use in high school and college literature courses. I have compiled a short list of basic terms. There are hundreds more, but most high school and basic college course research papers will probably deal with these terms the most.

It is important to remember, while reading literature, that the author is intending to do one of several things: entertain you, inform you, make you think, or possibly simply express thoughts and ideas that have been pressing on him or her. Great literature can transport you to new places, relax your mind, or make you feel that someone out there understands your life.
